The Story Behind Humpback Whale Specialty Coffee

Some cafés feel like a personal story – not just a business.
That’s exactly the case with Humpback Whale, a beautiful new spot in Munich’s Maxvorstadt, founded by Lucy Huong Quach.
After years in the specialty coffee scene, competing at events like the Cup Tasters and AeroPress Championships, Lucy brought her passion to life in this small but stunning café.
Her mission?
Serving exceptional coffee in a space that feels like home.
Background & Concept – Who’s behind it?
Lucy is well known among coffee insiders. In 2025, she won the German Cup Tasters Championship, and has worked in several cafés and coffee cultures including in Vietnam. Humpback Whale is her own creation, from concept to ceramics.
The idea is simple and rare: a place where every detail matters. From the handmade pottery to the carefully sourced beans and warm hospitality, this café is all about connection, craftsmanship, and calm.
Atmosphere & Location
You won’t spot Humpback Whale immediately from the street – it’s tucked away inside the Amalienpassage, a quiet courtyard just off Türkenstraße. That hidden feel only adds to its charm.
Step inside and you’re met with a bright, minimal space filled with wood, ceramics, and natural textures. There’s something about the white and blue tones, combined with the sunlight that subtly reminds you of a seaside escape, almost like a quiet morning in Santorini.
It’s beautifully designed yet feels completely unpretentious – like a living room built for slow mornings and peaceful afternoons. Whether you’re meeting a friend or sipping solo, this is one of those cafés where time seems to slow down.

Food Options
I’ve recently heard that they now offer croissants and cakes, which is great news for anyone wanting a small bite with their coffee. I haven’t had the chance to try them myself yet, but I’ll make sure to update this section as soon as I stop by again and get a proper impression.

Final Thoughts: Is a visit Worth It?
Humpback Whale isn’t loud or flashy. It’s humble, beautiful, and deeply personal – a café that reflects real passion for coffee and community.
The combination of Lucy’s expertise, the calm atmosphere, and R.D.’s beans makes this spot stand out in Munich’s ever-growing specialty scene.
If you’re into real quality and want a break from the buzz, this place is a quiet gem. Highly recommended for coffee lovers, solo sippers, and anyone in search of genuine craftsmanship in a cup.
